    Building debris, rock and rubbish are cleared from the area before any ground preparation begins.

    Subsoil cultivation

    Compacted subsoil is ripped or cultivated to improve root penetration once grass is established.

    Fine grading

    The area is fine-graded to smooth contours and the fall needed to shed surface water correctly.

    Topsoil spread

    Topsoil is spread evenly across the area to a consistent depth suited to lawn establishment.

    Final firming

    The surface is lightly rolled or firmed so it's stable and even, without being over-compacted.

    Handover

    We confirm the finished area with you and coordinate timing with your seeding contractor if one is booked.

Working conditions

Equipment and access for hydroseeding & lawn preparation

Ground preparation for seeding is usually carried out with a small excavator or tractor-mounted cultivation and grading attachments, sized to the area involved. Larger sites may need a roller pass to firm the surface before handover.

Plan around the work

The prepared area will be bare ground until seeding takes place, so it needs to be kept clear of vehicle and foot traffic during and after our work. In dry weather, cultivated soil can generate dust, which we manage where practical but can't fully eliminate on windy days.

We prepare the ground, we don't apply the hydroseed mix or manage germination, that's your seeding contractor's role. Even so, correct topsoil depth, an even surface and the right fall matter enormously to how well the seed establishes, so ground prepared properly gives the following seeding work a much better chance of success.

Do you apply the hydroseed mix?

No, we prepare the ground only. Application of the seed, mulch and fertiliser mix is carried out by a hydroseeding contractor, or by you if you're doing it yourself.

Can you recommend a hydroseeding contractor?

We can work alongside whichever contractor you choose and coordinate timing with them, but we don't operate as a hydroseeding company ourselves.

How much topsoil depth do I need?

Depth needed varies with the intended use of the area, we can talk through what's suitable for a standard lawn versus a sports or high-use surface.

Can you prepare ground for regular seeding instead of hydroseeding?

Yes, the ground preparation is much the same whether the seed goes down by hydroseeding, hand broadcasting or a seed drill.

How soon after preparation can seeding happen?

That's best confirmed with your seeding contractor, but ground holds up better if seeding follows fairly soon after preparation, before rain or foot traffic disturbs the finished surface.

Will you also mow or maintain the lawn once it's grown?

No, ongoing lawn care and mowing sit outside our earthworks scope. Our part finishes once the ground is prepared and handed over.
