Build the driveway from the ground up

    Site assessment

    We check existing ground conditions, access, levels and how water needs to move across and away from the driveway.

    Excavation

    The driveway area is excavated down to formation level, with spoil removed or reused elsewhere on site as agreed.

  3. 03

    Sub-base build-up

    Geotextile fabric and aggregate are placed in layers, with each layer compacted before the next goes down.

  4. 04

    Grading and falls

    Cross-fall and grade are set so surface water sheds away from buildings and doesn't pool at low points.

  5. 05

    Drainage and culvert tie-in

    Where a culvert or pipe crosses under the driveway, this is installed and bedded before final sub-base compaction.

    Handover

    The prepared base is left at the correct level and grade for your concrete or asphalt contractor to lay the final surface.

Expect some noise and dust while machinery is on site, and your vehicle access may be restricted during the works. We work around weather, since wet ground can affect compaction quality.

Do you lay the concrete or asphalt driveway surface as well?

No, we handle the excavation and base preparation. We work alongside concrete and asphalt contractors and hand the site over at the correct formation level and grade for them to lay the final surface.

How deep does the sub-base need to be?

It depends on the ground conditions and what the driveway needs to carry, from a light passenger car to farm vehicles or trucks. We assess this on site rather than applying one standard depth to every job.

Can you remove an old, failing driveway before starting?

Yes, breaking out and removing an existing surface is usually the first step when we're replacing a driveway rather than building a new one.

What time of year is best for this work?

We can work through most of the year, but wet winter conditions can slow excavation and affect how well the sub-base compacts, so we plan around forecast weather where possible.

Will you deal with drainage or a culvert crossing the driveway?

We can excavate for and install a culvert pipe as part of the driveway build if water needs to pass underneath it. Broader drainage design is coordinated with the relevant specialist where needed.

Do I need council approval for a new driveway?

This depends on the property and whether the driveway connects to a road corridor. We recommend confirming requirements with your council before work starts, and can work in with any conditions that come back.
